Project One: Experience Enrichment

Hero Shot -

Product Usage Storyboard-

Rationale-

My redesign of a pizza slicer is an organically formed slicer that is comfortable and easy to use. The product is designed to be targeted at an upper-class adult who enjoys cooking for themselves, family and friends or for those you admire organically shaped products that are fun and vibrant. The intended target market would want something that has an eye-catching form, but is also pleasurable and easy to use.

I intended the design of my pizza slicer to have an organic and flowing form that is meaningful. I wanted to design something completely different from current pizza slicers in the market, which I believe I have achieved, however it is still recognisable as a pizza slicer. The simplistic and organic form isn’t accidental. It is designed to fit perfectly in the hand and the meaningful curves hold the hand into place, which makes it difficult for the slicer to slip out of the hand when using it and also means that the slicer doesn’t require any kind of rubbery grip. This also means that the user would be able to cut a pizza easier by requiring less strength to hold on to the slicer. Current pizza slicers on the market are very similar and usually have a handle and a wheel attached. I tried to make those two features into one form by deliberately incorporating the curvy and organic features which goes well with the cutting wheel as a form. The design also easily communicates where to hold the product and also suggests which way to cut the pizza in.

My pizza slicer is made from plastic and is hollow on the inside, which means that it uses less material and makes it light weight, but also gives it the bulk that makes it fell solid and comfortable. The body of the slicer will be made in two plastic parts. The blade is made from a high grade stainless steel which makes cutting pizzas a breeze.

  1. A very interesting and elegant design tool. The design meets both ergonomic and safety features which is important when it comes to innovating such tool as a pizza cutter. The handle may need a slight adjustment to prevent the hand from slipping although it has the 'grab me' connotation due to its slender look. It makes the user want to buy a pizza just to try it! I know I do.

  2. Your model looks amazing, i think this design is great and very different to other cutters available, i also love the red colour as it makes it stand out and gives it a bit of a retro look. You may need some way to open it to remove any food that may get caught.

  3. This redesign of a pizza cutter is quite unique and original. Your design has a nice aesthetic appeal and looks like it would function quite well. The shape of the handle along with the red colour really speaks the language of pizza slicers. Some improvements that could be made would be to make the handle a bit smaller and less 'bulky'. However overall the design is quite nice.

  4. This pizza slicer displays a simple, quirky and yet elegant aesthetics. It also show a good practicality in terms of its overall shape which suggests easy usability and good ergonomics. Perhaps another material can be introduce on the handle. Overall this pizza slicer demonstrate a good integration ofdesign elements and principles evident through this designer's design approach.

  5. This pizza slicer has quite a nice, organic form compared to conventional pizza slicers. At first glance, it reminded me of motorcycle wheels and just the idea of fast racing. I think adding a bit of texture to the grip may make it safer and give more confidence to the user handling it. Overall great design!

  6. The pizza looks simple but comes with very interesting structure and colour used for the handle. I really like the colour very much, somehow it suits the classic colour of all famous pizza logos/brands and very eye pleasing. I also like the fact that you've added in a little protruding structure just under the blade to protect one's fingers. I also have to agree that a bit of texture should be added for better grip at the side and the top of the handle. All in all, it's one of my favourite designs so far.
